In public debates and narratives on migration, complex realities are often oversimplified, and incomplete or distorted information leads to policies that are ineffective or harmful to people. This makes it essential to provide solid, grounded, and independent data on migration.

MMC aims to fill this gap by providing high-quality analysis and data grounded in the experiences of people on the move. We examine shifting migration patterns, routes, and dynamics across different regions of the world, blending data, field research, and on-the-ground testimonies to capture the realities of mobility today.

Our objectives

MMC has three overarching objectives:

  • To contribute to a better, more nuanced, and balanced understanding of mixed migration (knowledge).
  • To contribute to evidence-based and better-informed migration policies and debates (policy).
  • To contribute to effective, evidence-based protection responses for people on the move (programming).

What we do

Data collection

  • 4Mi migration data: At the heart of our work is 4Mi, the largest globally comparable primary data collection system on mixed migration, collected through daily interviews with refugees and migrants on the move around the world. We constantly adapt methods to capture evolving migration trends and realities.
  • Qualitative data: In most research, MMC applies a mixed-methods approach, employing a wide range of evidence-gathering methods, such as key informant interviews, focus group discussions, in-depth qualitative interviews with migrants on the move and literature reviews to complement our quantitative data.

Areas of research focus

MMC is uniquely positioned to focus on the full cycle of migratory journeys, from origin to potential return. Key research topics include

  • Profiles of people migrating
  • Why people migrate (drivers)
  • How people make decisions to migrate

During migration and in transit

  • Risks, protection, and assistance for people on the move
  • Smuggling and trafficking
  • Information and technology
  • Conditions of stay in transit and determinants of onward movement
  • Stranded migrants

In (temporary) destination

  • Urban migration and cities
  • Conditions of stay and access to services

Return and reintegration

  • Risks and vulnerabilities faced by voluntary or forced returns

Cross-cutting themes

  • Policy and governance
  • Gender and sexual identity
  • Youth and children
  • Labour, livelihoods and social cohesion
  • Climate (im)mobility
