Climate and mobility in the Middle East

This report synthesizes four research case studies on how climate hazards, economic pressures, and other factors shape mobility decisions. The study explores perceptions and attitudes across four locations in the Middle East in Aden (Yemen), Al Maharah (Yemen), Al-Hasakeh (Syria), and Al-Qadissiya (Iraq).

The findings show that economic hardship, climate-related risks, and sometimes conflict interact to influence migration. Respondents noted that climate and mobility in the Middle East are increasingly linked, with climate hazards seen as a growing threat to livelihoods

Most respondents had not moved in the ten years before data collection. However, many expressed a strong desire to migrate, often limited by a lack of resources. When movement did occur, it was usually within national borders, although many preferred to move abroad.

Communities have adopted coping and adaptation strategies, but many are unsustainable without more support. Respondents called for stronger action from governments to help address climate risks and protect vulnerable groups.
