Smuggling of Migrants in the Sahel – Report Launch

Virtual

Join us for the online launch of the Smuggling of Migrants in the Sahel report on Thursday 23rd March 2023 from 2:30-3:30pm GMT.

Hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for West and Central Africa, this event will present key findings from the fourth UNODC report in a series on transnational organized crime in the Sahel.

The report explores the smuggling of migrants in the Sahel by looking at the demand for and supply of smuggling services, the main routes and market dynamics, the roles and responsibilities of smugglers, and the enablers, including corruption, of migrant smuggling in the Sahel. For the purpose of this report, MMC’s 4Mi teams in Burkina Faso, Mali, the Niger, Senegal and Tunisia were involved in data collection and supporting analysis.

The launch will feature opening remarks from Mr. Kameldy Neldjingaye, UNODC Deputy Regional Representative for West & Central Africa and a panel discussion with Ms. Julie Astoul (Research Officer at UNODC), Ms. Jessamy Garver-Affeldt (Regional Research Coordinator at MMC) and Ms. Rania al-Rajji (Regional Gender Advisor at OHCHR). The event will conclude with a Q&A session.

Please RSVP by March 22nd to julie.astoul@un.org and cecilia.rossa@un.org to confirm your attendance and receive a meeting link.
