About MMC’s work in North Africa

MMC engages in data collection, research, analysis and policy development on mixed migration in North Africa.
Our primary objectives are to fill the knowledge gap on mixed migration in the region; to inform programming for migrants, particularly in the area of protection; and to inform policy-making around the rights and protection of people on the move.

Quarterly Regional Updates

In the second quarter of 2025, MMC West and North Africa published a new snapshot drawing on 5,232 migrant surveys to explore how environmental pressures shape international mobility in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Data collection is now underway to deepen the understanding of climate-related mobility and immobility in the region. MMC also released a report on Youth Migration and Caregivers Traveling with Children in West Africa, based on three years of data collection from 3,798 respondents in Guinea, Mali, and Niger. It maps key migration routes and highlights the specific dangers faced by youth migrants and caregivers. A twin report focusing on mobility toward Morocco will be published in September. Finally, MMC completed interviews with over 1,000 migrants in Mauritania, covering Chami, Nouadhibou, Nouakchott, Sélibaby, and Rosso to better understand migrant profiles, protection needs, and smuggling dynamics along the Atlantic Route.
