Türkiye-Syria earthquake’s impact
on Afghan, Iranian, Iraqi and Somali migrants and refugees in Türkiye
On 6 February 2023, two earthquakes hit Türkiye, displacing 3.3 million people from the southern and central regions. While Adiyaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep and Malatya provinces were most severely affected, and Adana, Diyarbakir, Elazıg, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa were also directly impacted, the effects reached across the country. This paper explores its effects on the needs and migration decision-making of Afghan, Iranian, Iraqi and Somali migrants and refugees interviewed by MMC through the 4Mi programme in Türkiye.
