Data and Research on Mixed Movement Decision-Making and Protection Experiences in transit along the Western Indian Ocean Route

MMC Eastern and Southern Africa | Egypt and Yemen (ESA) has partnered with UNHCR’s South Africa Multi-Country Office to support an innovative pilot research project on the Western Indian Ocean Route towards Mayotte. MMC will pilot an in-depth qualitative approach in the Comoros, Madagascar, and Tanzania to better understand the protection experiences, movement decision-making, and intentions and aspirations of (prospective) people on the move along this route.

Research with SOGIESC Migrants in Kenya to examine their Displacement Decision-Making and Protection Experiences

In 2024, MMC is collaborating with DRC Kenya on a DANIDA-funded project aimed at collecting evidence on the experiences of SOGIESC migrants in Kenya. The research focuses on the impact of recent anti-SOGIESC policy developments in Uganda, Kenya and the wider region on displacement decision-making, and intra- and cross-regional mixed migration.

Migrants cross Africa in worse conditions

There are more migrants crossing Africa and in worse humanitarian conditions, warns the report “On This Journey, No One Cares if They Live or Die”, with interviews with more than 31,000 refugees and migrants on the route between East-West Africa and the Mediterranean coast of Africa.

Smugglers not main perpetrators of violence against migrants, finds joint UN report

“While the EU for years declared various policies & strategies to destroy the business model of smugglers, it’s safe to conclude that Europe’s migration policies have done the exact opposite,” said Bram Frouws, director of the Mixed Migration Centre, during the press briefing of a new joint UNHCR, IOM, MMC report.

Risks multiply for Mediterranean-bound migrants, UN study shows

“Much of the extreme violence on these routes is happening in a situation of near complete impunity,” said Bram Frouws, Director of the Mixed Migration Centre that co-produced the report, calling for more accountability. “We should really follow the money and catch the big guys.”
